Quick answer
For most new Skilled Worker applications made since 22 July 2025, the job must pay at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher, and it must usually be at degree level (RQF 6). Some applicants, such as new entrants, can qualify with a salary of at least £33,400. First-time main applicants must also show English at level B2 from 8 January 2026.
If you are an IT professional or a healthcare worker in Kerala, the news of the UK’s £41,700 salary threshold might feel like a door slamming shut. It’s a steep climb from previous years, and with the new UK work visa B2 English requirement now in effect (as of January 8, 2026), the bar has never been higher.
But here is the truth: The £41,700 figure is the standard rate. For many Indian professionals, there are strategic “codes” and alternative routes that make the UK dream very much alive.
The “Discount” Routes: When You Don’t Need £41,700
The UK immigration system isn’t a single wall; it’s a series of gates. Depending on your age, qualifications, or job role, your personal “salary floor” could be significantly lower.
1. The “New Entrant” Advantage (Option E)
Are you under 26, a recent UK graduate, or switching from a Student visa? You qualify as a New Entrant.
The Math: You only need to earn £33,400 (or 70% of your job’s “going rate,” whichever is higher).
Why it matters: This makes junior IT developer or analyst roles perfectly sponsor-able.
2. The Immigration Salary List (ISL)
Certain roles are in such high demand that the UK government gives them a “discounted” threshold.
The Floor: For ISL roles, the general threshold drops to £33,400.
Key Roles: The list changes, so check that your occupation code is on the current Immigration Salary List before you apply. You must still be paid the full going rate for the job.
3. The Health and Care Sector (The “Golden” Route)
If you are a nurse, doctor or another eligible health professional, the rules are different—and much friendlier.
The Floor: Most Health and Care workers on national pay scales have a threshold of just £25,000.
The Bonus: No Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) and lower visa fees.
Important: Since 22 July 2025, most new Skilled Worker jobs must be at degree level (RQF 6). Jobs below that level qualify only if they are on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List. New overseas recruitment for care workers and senior care workers also closed on that date.
4. The B2 English Requirement
One change you must prepare for is the English proficiency level. As of January 2026, the standard has shifted. While B1 was the old benchmark, first-time main applicants now need to demonstrate CEFR Level B2 (for IELTS for UKVI, at least 5.5 in each of reading, writing, speaking and listening).
Don’t Forget the “B2” Factor
Starting this year, the English language requirement for Skilled Worker Visas in Kerala has shifted from B1 (Intermediate) to B2 (Upper Intermediate). This means you must prove you can handle complex professional conversations, not just basic interaction.
Visa Xpert Tip: Ensure your IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI scores reflect this higher standard before your employer assigns your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
