Interview waiver eligibility: The 12-month rule, explained, by Visa Xpert Kochi

Quick answer

Since 1 October 2025, the US interview waiver for Indians is limited to B1/B2 renewals within 12 months of the previous visa's expiry (previously 48 months), where the applicant was 18 or older when that visa was issued, has never been refused, had all 10 fingerprints taken, and is applying in their country of residence. The old age exemptions for children under 14 and adults over 79 are gone. H-1B, F-1, L-1 and first-time applicants must attend an interview.

"Am I eligible for dropbox?" is the most common US visa question we hear in Kochi, and the answer changed twice in 2025. Here is the current rule, with the official wording, and the traps that catch Kerala applicants.

The current rule

According to the US Department of State update of 18 September 2025 (effective 1 October 2025), consular officers may waive the interview for:

  • Applicants renewing a B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 visa (or Border Crossing Card), in the same category, within 12 months of the prior visa's expiry, where the prior visa was issued for full validity and the applicant was at least 18 at the time
  • Diplomatic and official visa categories (A, G, NATO, C-3 and similar), and H-2A renewals

Everyone else, including applicants under 14 and over 79, generally needs an in-person interview.

Extra conditions for India (ustraveldocs)

  • Apply in your consular district of residence
  • All 10 fingerprints taken at the last issuance
  • Previous visa not lost, stolen, revoked or CWOP
  • No prior refusal, unless overcome or waived
  • Drop-off appointment at least 15 calendar days before the 12-month window ends
  • Passport valid for at least 15 days after the appointment
  • You must be in India during the submission process

The 15-day trap

Suppose your visa expired on 1 November 2025. The 12-month window ends on 1 November 2026, but your drop-off appointment must be on or before 17 October 2026. If you book later, the system asks you to schedule biometrics and an interview instead. Start the process at least 6 to 8 weeks before the deadline.

Gulf Malayalis: where to apply

Since September 2025, applicants should apply in their country of nationality or residence. If you live and work in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Oman, apply through the US mission there. If you have returned to live in Kerala, apply in India with proof of residence. Applying in the wrong place can lead to delays or refusal.

What if you do not qualify?

You attend an interview at Chennai. Interview waits were about 7 months in September 2026, so book the moment you know you need one. A previous visa still helps your case at the interview.
